About Culture Central, Inc.
Culture Central was inspired by a group of African dance enthusiasts who called themselves the DC African Dancers. This group wanted to expand the variety of dance options available to the Metro DC area by introducing intensive classes on rarely taught dance techniques. These individuals worked together in a loose confederation for one year offering beginning dance classes for the Senegalese dance style called Sabar.. While holding the dance classes each week the women saw a bond forming in their small community and began to realize that dance could be used for more than just athletic pursuits. They concluded that dance could be used to heal the community by teaching children and adults about distant cultures and traditions. The group incorporated as Culture Central in August, 2005 to formalize bringing this kind of experience to the community.

Culture Central’s mission is to provide arts and humanities related programming for adults and children to learn about African culture and heritage within a permanent community space. Many arts organizations in metropolitan areas are being driven out of their space due to escalating real estate values. African arts organizations in Washington, DC are also suffering as a result of this phenomenon. Culture Central has initiated a building fund drive to raise funds to purchase a home for African cultural arts organizations. You can help by donating to the fund. Culture Central is a 501(c)(3) organization. All donations are tax deductible |
