Dance Builds LivesTM
Culture Central has created a program that will help women address physical, psychological and mental awareness in an attempt to keep them from starting or relapsing into the negative behavior that lead them down the path of incarceration. The program based on dance movement is called Dance Builds LivesTM (DBL) and will help address the needs of women of color who have or have recently been incarcerated and women who are in drug recovery. Music and dance have been and continue to be integral components of the social fabric of black communities through out the Diaspora. The African American community has a rich dance heritage that is reflected in all aspects of life from strictly social activity to religious and spiritual life. Therefore, movement to music and dance will seem familiar and comforting to the program participants.

We were treated to a really wonderful weekend when Marie Basse-Wiles traveled to Washington, DC and shared her knowledge, grace and with with us for three days. Eacjh of the three intensive classes started with a class session where Marie explained the origin of the dances we were learning as well as the cultural context within which the dance developed. It was really fantastic.

LAST TWO SUNDAYS AT JOE'S We're so sorry to annouce that our last two weekly Sunday classes at Joe's Movement Emporium will take place on Sunday, June 17th and June 24th. We'll be re-grouping during the month of July and hope to bring our Sunday classes back later this summer at a different venue. Please check back with us towards the end of July. In the meantime, save Sunday, August 5th for our second Mini Dance Marathon, which will take place at Joe's. Thanks to everyone for your support over the past three years. |
