Kouyate shared his musical talents with the world. He participated in international exchange and artistic development projects in Mexico, Malaysia, and his home community in Tambacounda, Senegal. He was also a recipient of an Artist Exploration Award from Arts International; Individual Fellowship, City Arts Projects and Arts Education Awards from the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities; an Arts Education Fellowship Award from the Council for Basic Education; and Solo Recitalist Fellowship Awards from the National Endowment for the Arts Music Program.

In addition, Kouyate developed and contributed to the development of musical arrangements for many theatrical and dance productions. These include "Sankofa African Dance and Drum Ensemble - 30th Anniversary Concert" presented by State University of New York (SUNY) Brockport; "Sankofa Old Souls" presented by Florida International University in collaboration with Delou Africa Dance Ensemble; "Sundiata," a ballet presented by Indiana University Dance/Ballet program; "Romeo and Juliet," a collaboration between Howard University and Catholic University Theatre Arts departments; "Timbuktu" a musical production presented by the Howard University Theatre Arts program; "Dance: Speaking the Voices of Our People,"a dance concert presented by the Howard University Dance Division; "Oedipus,"a production of the Shakespeare Theatre of Washington, DC and choreography for the African Dance program at Duke University, Durham, North Carolina.

Djimo Kouyate had many professional accomplishments but his legacy is probably best exemplified by his family, all of whom still perform as a family today as well as individual artists.
