In addition, Kouyate developed and contributed to the development of musical arrangements for many theatrical and dance productions. These include "Sankofa African Dance and Drum Ensemble - 30th Anniversary Concert" presented by State University of New York (SUNY) Brockport; "Sankofa Old Souls" presented by Florida International University in collaboration with Delou Africa Dance Ensemble; "Sundiata," a ballet presented by Indiana University Dance/Ballet program; "Romeo and Juliet," a collaboration between Howard University and Catholic University Theatre Arts departments; "Timbuktu" a musical production presented by the Howard University Theatre Arts program; "Dance: Speaking the Voices of Our People,"a dance concert presented by the Howard University Dance Division; "Oedipus,"a production of the Shakespeare Theatre of Washington, DC and choreography for the African Dance program at Duke University, Durham, North Carolina. Djimo Kouyate had many professional accomplishments but his legacy is probably best exemplified by his family, all of whom still perform as a family today as well as individual artists. Our readers may be familiar with Amadou Kouyate and Bintou Kouyate, members of Farafina Kan! In addition to his own family, his guiding hand can be seen on other dancers and drummers throughout the region and will continue to be seen for many generations to come. Information about Djimo Kouyate was obtained from Memory of African Culture, Inc . website, life history written by Akua Femi Kouyate, as well as severall other sites. |

Welcome to The Cultural Beat, an eNewsletter for and about the African dance community brought to you by Culture Central, Inc. Over the years we've met so many people who share our love for African culture. Unfortunately, we only get to talk to each other in quick conversations snatched between classes at conferences or when we're on the run before and after our regular local classes. We hope The Cultural Beat will become established as a community forum where issues that are pertinent to our dance and drum community can be discussed and developed. We hope you enjoy this issue and we welcome your comments and suggestions for future issues.
