Yoga can be described as an exercise system that consists of a series of postures and sequences of poses combined and defined by breathing techniques. Strength, flexibility and body awareness exercises are regular components of a yoga workout.
Aerobic exercise is known to stress muscles due to repetitive
muscular movement. Physiologically, the muscle fibers stay tight and
active consuming a fair amount of oxygen. Over exercising can result in
muscle fatigue which in turn can make one more susceptible to injury.
Many yoga poses include non-movement of the body focusing more on
stretching muscles and increasing oxygen to the body through the
process of holding a position and deep breathing. Many yoga
practitioners believe that yoga poses help increase lung capacity by
improving the flexibility of the rib area, shoulders and back which
allows the lungs to expand more fully. The results of this process
improve strength, aerobic capacity and lung function. As cardiovascular
fitness (described as the efficiency of taking in and processing
oxygen) improves, stamina will increase which can be a boost to the
aerobic component of an exercise routine.
